Burlesque Dance Tip of the Week!

Fluidity of Movement

For a more complete and stronger presentation of a dance movement, I suggest creating your own resistance.  This is especially helpful in slower movements, and creates a more graceful appearance.

How to create fluidity:

Engage all your muscles, and use the imagery as though you are moving underwater.  Example:  Rather than lowering your arms, pull your arms slowly through the air, and encompass as much space as possible during the process.  This will also add the additional benefit of working on toning muscles as well as burning a few more calories!

Also, be sure you're incorporating all of your muscles! Remember, even with isolating one part of the body, you should still be engaging the rest of your body to produce the emphasized movement.  A dancer's body, though it may appear to be at rest, never is.

Your Velvet Kitten dance instructor and choreographer, Jana Edele, supplied this burlesque dance tip of the week.

You can still catch the "Fever!"

It's not to late to try out "Fedora Fever!"  Sign up for the three remaining classes of the workshop at $45 (plus tax).

Want to try out a class?  $15.00 (plus tax) per class.

"Fedora Fever" continues every Monday night in June, the 14th, 21st, and 28th.  There are spots available in the 5:30 pm class.  Must get approval from Cara Young to attend the 6:30pm class as a drop-in due to size of the class.

And to answer some of your questions regarding the Velvet Kittens' Burlesque Body Sculpt classes…

What is Burlesque Body Sculpt?

Burlesque Body Sculpt is a dance-fitness class incorporating burlesque style movement for a full body workout.

What are the benefits of Burlesque Body Sculpt?

Some of the benefits of BBS include a stronger core, muscle toning, increase in coordination and flexibility…and it's all presented in a fun, relaxed atmosphere!

What is the Summertime Blues Burlesque Workshop Series?

Summertime Blues is a specialty workshop combining the Burlesque Body Sculpt formula of 30 minutes of stretching and toning, then 30 minutes focusing on one burlesque style dance number.  Every session of Summertime Blues is danced to blues music, and incorporates a new dance prop.  (Boas and Blues, Fedora Fever, etc)

What if I really just want to take burlesque for fun, and not really concerned about a workout or stretching?

Any type of dance movement requires your muscles to be used in a particular manner to execute the movement.  Some of the movement may be foreign to your body.  It is of the utmost importance that whenever you engage in a physical activity, you perform the proper warm-ups for that precise activity.  All styles of dance rely heavily on a strong core for safe and proper execution of dance movement as well. Also, as a dance-fitness class, Burlesque Body Sculpt is presented and instructed as a dance class, with the added bonus of also being a fitness class.

If your gym or studio would like to offer one of our Burlesque Body Sculpt classes or workshops, or another course from our program, please contact us

Be on the look out for our appearance on channel 33 news, featuring our "Fedora Fever" Burlesque Body Sculpt!

~All classes are designed and instructed by VK artistic director/choreographer Jana Edele.  Jana Edele has over 15 years experience working as a dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor, training ballerinas to even some of DFW's local burlesque performers.  Edele is also available for private instruction and choreography.~

From OMGhairstyles: Summer Wedding Hair

OMGhairstyles is an on-going sponsor to the Velvet Kittens of Le Cabaret Burlesque.  Owner and stylist Bittney Powell has some wedding hair tips for the summer bride.

Summer time weddings may seem picture-perfect, but the weather can do a number on your mane. Here are a few hairstyle tips to get stunning strands for your warm-weather wedding.

Updos

Style: Whether sleek for an elegant look or slightly disheveled for a more rustic style, updos are a perfect way to get chic summer hair. Knots, bun, and twists of all shapes and sizes have made their way to the altar.
Get the look: Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb and prep your hair with a volumizing mousse to tame flyaways. Blow-dry hair on a low heat setting or let air dry. Once it’s completely dry, curl your strands with hot rollers or use a curling iron and set with Velcro curlers. Leave the rollers in until your hair is cool, which will help retain the curl. Remove the curlers and slightly tease the base of each wave for added volume. Once you’re finished, apply a thin layer of hair serum to your hands and gently tousle. Sweep your tresses back into a low bun, twist, or knot. Don’t worry about getting it perfect — the slightly messy look will exaggerate the soft summer time style.

Down ‘Dos

Style: From long, ethereal waves to glam pin curls, soft, flowing hair provides an instant laid-back look to any warm-weather wedding.
Get the look: Work in a curl enhancer from roots to ends and scrunch. Let your strands air dry and tousle, or blow-dry on the lowest setting with a diffuser to reduce frizz. Set your strands in hot rollers for a more structured, glamorous look, or use a large-barrel curling iron and wrap strands around the outside of the iron for an unruly/beachy style. Spritz with a light finishing spray for hold and shine and finish by adding a little pomade to your fingertips and working it into your roots. Spice it up by adding braids or twists for extra depth.

Highlights

Style: Sun-kissed highlights are the look for summer time tresses. Not only do natural highlights add intensity, they also photograph nicely.
Get the look: Opt for a variety of color levels, which add movement and demension. Brunettes should never go lighter than what the sun would naturally do to their hair. For blondes, the key is depth; add various tones of lowlights for soft color. For a natural, less-structured look that blends with your roots and color, ask your stylist to try a technique called baliage, hand painting highlights and lowlights without foil.

Taming Flyaways

Style: You want shiny, silky smooth hair but humid weather can leave your strands frizzy and out-of-control, while drier climates can create split ends and straw-like locks. Keep your surroundings in mind when choosing your wedding hairstyle.
Get the look: If your hair tends to get frizzy, consider an updo that’s loose around the hairline and nape of your neck, which will conceal any frizz. For hair worn down in drier areas, condition your hair with a mask the night before and apply a curl enhancer and SPF to keep your locks looking refreshed and hydrated. Have pomade and finishing spray on hand throughout the day for touch-ups.
