Burlesque Dance Tip of the Week!

Creating Muscle Memory

Remembering dance movement can be a tricky thing.  When you attend any type of dance class or learn choreography, you generally work with a mirror to help guide you or the instructor/choreographer to follow.  These provide visual cues that you lose once you hit the stage (or turn away from the mirror).

How to Create Muscle Memory:

The best way to create muscle memory is to feel your body, how it's moving, what muscles are being used to create the movement.  Pay attention to the muscular changes as you transition from one movement to another.  This way you learn by feeling the movement, rather than "copying" it.

By using this technique you will find that when your mind starts to wonder, your body will take over.

Another additional benefit:  If dancing as a visual art form is new, you may not have yet gotten the understanding in creating the movements powerfully by correct muscular usage.  Or if you haven't received correct training from a knowledgeable instructor, this may not have been a concept in which you have been introduced.  Incorporating stronger muscular movements creates structural strength to your dance steps, and produces a more polished, professional visual picture.

Your Velvet Kitten dance instructor and choreographer, Jana Edele, supplied this burlesque dance tip of the week.

New burlesque workshop starts tonight!

This is one full body workout you don't want to miss!

"Fedora Fever I" (workshop) – The Summertime Blues Burlesque Workshop, themed "Fedora Fever" from June, is all about class and style using the fashionable burlesque prop, the fedora hat.  Set to the sultry and steamy blues song "Every Night," trainer Jana Edele, artistic director and choreographer of the Velvet Kittens of Le Cabaret Burlesque, begins with a 30-minute stretching and toning warm-up followed by signature burlesque dance choreography focused on slow hip and shoulder isolations and sultry burlesque movement.  Fedoras are provided.

"Fedora Fever II" (workshop) - This is a continuation of "Fedora Fever," focusing on the dance number and getting it €˜performance ready.'  There is also an optional performance opportunity available to students on Friday, July 16th (students may attend workshop and opt to not perform).  This is a two-class workshop (July 7 and 14, 7:30 - 8:30 pm), $25.00.

Burlesque Basics (drop-in class) - The subtle glance of an eye, an isolated roll of a shoulder, a smooth and slow smile, this is the introduction to the theatrical art of the burlesque tease!  An introduction of basic dance steps, focusing on simple exercises and combinations, and introduces the concept of performing.

Burlesque Basics is an introductory burlesque dance class, focusing basic dance terminology, proper execution of movement, isolations, posture, and performance.  This is a great beginning foundation for those new to burlesque dance, or students simply looking for a beginning dance foundation, and anyone who just wants to indulge in a fun burlesque class.
