The Burlesque Starlet:  Connecting to your inner Bombshell!

About The Burlesque Starlet Workshop Series: The Burlesque Starlet is a sequence of beginner classes constructed to provide a prologue of essential movement for the novice of students.  In essence the Burlesque Starlet Workshop Series explains the “how to’s and what not to do’s” on your way to burlesque stardom!

The Burlesque Starlet Workshops are a general breakdown of our Burlesque Basics course, narrowed down and divided into precise subjects for the needs and interests of our students.

Our introductory class is Walkin’ & Struttin’, the most basic of introductory courses for the new students, or a brush-up on terminology and technique for the more advanced.  In Walkin’ & Struttin’ learn The Technique of the Glide, How to Kitten-Prance, plus spins, pivots, hip isolations, and other fun dance movement often found on the burlesque stages.  Walkin’ & Struttin’ is offered as one-hour class.

New BURLESQUE classes & workshops in Fort Worth!

The Velvet Kittens of Le Cabaret Burlesque and Bombshell Boutique & Studio bring burlesque dance class and Burlesque Body Sculpt â„¢ to Fort Worth!

Jana Edele, the artistic director/choreographer of the Velvet Kittens, has put together a whole new series of Burlesque Basics classes for the Bombshell Boutique & Studio:  The Burlesque Starlet:  Connecting with your Inner Bombshell!  Read on about what you can expect on begin a “Burlesque Starlet.”

About the Birth of the Burlesque Starlet Series

Burlesque Body Sculpt ™ has taken on a life of it’s own, with monthly student performances.  Opening classes in Fort Worth Jana Edele wondered how to better suit the needs of the people who are often intimidated by the words “burlesque” or “dance” class.  She decided it was time to really put the basics of dance and burlesque into a series, which can over time be orchestrated to be progressive yet non-intimidating and fit the needs of her students as they advance. And this is where The Burlesque Starlet was born!

The Burlesque Starlet:  Connecting to your Inner Bombshell is a breakdown of all things beginner and presented in small packages: burlesque vocabulary, dance steps, and even the acting involved in performance.  It also can be used as a study guide for any particular student interested on building up the education to erupt onto the burlesque scene as a performer by providing the “how to’s and what not to do’s” on your way to burlesque stardom!  Edele says, “The purpose of these workshops is to really make dance accessible to anyone and everyone, and allow an outlet for adult students to find the joy and mind/body relationship that dance provides.”

The Burlesque Starlet series will be available at:

Burlesque Class Q&A

Question:  I would love to learn how to do this! My only concern is that I am not very fit and a little on the “fluffy” side…but I would love to learn how to be sexy and comfortable with my body…is this something every one can learn to do?

Answer:  I am always so surprised how often I receive this question.  Of course this is something that everyone can do!  Adult students go into classes for a variety of reasons, some its fitness, for others social; some it’s just a fun hobby.  Burlesque classes offer another unique element because it does offer students an opportunity to express themselves a little differently than they usually are able to in most other classes. Whether it’s ballet or burlesque, I enjoy sharing dance and would love for you to come and dance with me.

Here’s my response to ALL the questions “What about my (age, weight, disabilities, etc)?”  We welcome everyone to enjoy the benefits of dance, all ages, shapes and sizes.  Anyone with disabilities are greatly encouraged to enjoy the benefits of dance, and we ask that you contact us in advance of any special needs so we may accommodate your ability to participate in class.

Fort Worth Burlesque Classes

The Velvet Kittens are adding burlesque class locations!  Beginning in December we will be offering classes in both Dallas and Fort Worth.  We will be releasing Fort Worth schedule, rates, and how to register in the upcoming week.  We have also designed a few unique classes and workshops for December and January, and are looking forward to dancing with you!

BBS Student takes the stage!

Congratulations to Burlesque Body Sculpt ™ dancer Tiffany!  Tiffany has been a student of the VK’s BBS workshops since June of 2010 at the Verandah Club (Dallas, TX).  After her on-going attendance to classes and performance workshops, she debuted on the Dallas stage as a BBS dancer, and even appeared on Good Morning Texas.  We are proud to announce she has made the transition from student to professional performer, and will be appearing in this year’s Burlesque Nutcracker!

Want to see this Velvet Kitten student become a Velvet Kitten dancer?  Get your tickets here. The Burlesque Nutcracker, directed by Charles Ballinger, opens November 26 and runs thru December 26.  These shows sell out fast, so get your tickets in advance.

Fun Trivia!  The Burlesque Nutcracker (from MBS Production’s The Beulaville Baptist Book Club Presents:  A Bur-less-Q-Nutcracker) is based on the VK’s original Vaudevillian-Burlesque Nutcracker and stars it’s own Velvet Kitten cast.  This year the Burlesque Nutcracker will perform it’s 100th show!   In fact, this Nutcracker performs more shows than any other version in DFW, and you will never look at the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy the same way again!

MBS Artistic Director Mark-Brian Sonna and VK Artistic Director Jana Edele are the choreographers behind the Burlesque Nutcracker and their work has been described as “ingenious, inspired and amusing. By turns graceful and bawdy, with just the right balance of edification and dance-hall shimmy.”

A Burlesque Class Q&A

Question:

Hi there! I had the pleasure of seeing the Velvet Kittens perform at Rembrandt’s last year. You guys are amazing! I would love to start taking burlesque classes, and I’m just trying to find out the schedule. I used to perform with a modern dance company in Houston, and I’ve had ballet and jazz training as well. But that was several years and quite a few pounds ago, so I am a little nervous about getting back on the dance floor. Any suggestions for classes? Thanks! (LDG)

Answer:

I currently have three different options for you to choose from!

Option One:  Two-hour one-day workshop on Monday, Oct. 18th (6:30-8:30pm). We begin with stretching and toning, then will focus on learning a fun intermediate level dance.

Option Two:  Naughty and Nice Burlesque Body Sculpt workshop (6:30-7:30pm).  Beginning Oct. 25th we begin our 4-class session workshop. Each class begins with stretching and toning, and then throughout 4 class sessions I teach one dance number.  Following the conclusion of Naughty and Nice we move into a Performance Preparation Workshop, in which get the dance ready for a performance.  The performance is optional for each student, and by taking the workshop you are not obligated to perform.

Option Three: Burlesque Basics, Monday nights, 8:30-9:15pm.  Burlesque Basics is an introductory class.  We begin with stretching, and then go into across the floors, then a short dance combination.  Each class is structured around the individuals in the class.

As a dancer, I complete understand your nervousness about getting back into classes and dancing.  I think you’ll find these classes are structured as any dance class, and the familiarity will be comforting.  I also move at a slow and steady pace so that the material will not be overwhelming to learn. With your background, I think the two-hour workshop or Naughty and Nice would be a good fit.  Burlesque Basics is more of a beginner class, and most students have little to no dance background.  The workshops tend to have a variety of non-dancers and dancers.  Pricing for classes listed below.

Oct. 18 two-hour workshop:  $35 (if registered by Oct 15); $45 day of.

Naughty and Nice Workshop:  $45 (if registered by Oct 20); $60 day of.

Burlesque Basics:  $20 per class

All classes are held at the Verandah Club (2201 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas TX)
